404 Ring Homepage
Why does this ring exist?
This ring showcases custom 404 error pages.
What is a custom 404 error page?
A 404 is the error which a web server generates when a visitor attempts to view a page which does not exist.
Most webmasters are content to leave the default 404 page in place, but a select few choose to customize their page. Some are funny, some are relavent to the overall site content, and some are just plain different.
How is a custom 404 error page created?
Please see this how to.
What makes this ring special?
- Great sites
- Great surfability
Member site requirements:
- Your registered page must be an original, custom 404 error page.
- The page registered must be the one which will contain your navbar, not a page which will link to it.
- Your site will be checked, by intentionally generating a 404 error. The content of the page which comes up must match that of the page which you have registered.
- This is a family friendly ring, so adult content pages will not be accepted.
- No pop-up windows, pop-under windows, malware, or other harmful or annoying content.
If you have a custom 404 page, and your site meets the above requirements, please consider joining this ring. You may do so by using this link: JOIN.
When your site is approved, the navbar will be required to meet the following requirements before your site will be activated:
- The ring's navbar must be easily located on your page.
- The navbar must be clearly visible once found. i.e. not obscured under a malformed table, or a java advertisement.
- You must use the SSNB navbar. The HTML navbar is not accepted, as it is static, and can not be updated across member sites.
How do I install the SSNB code for the navbar?
- From your My Account page there will be a horizontal navigation bar midway down the page. On that bar, click the link titled URLs.
Clicking this link will also get you to the same point: URLs
- You should now see a section of the page titled Your Web Sites in URL Order. Locate the URL you registered in that area.
- To the right of that URL, there is a link labeled Get SSNB Code . Click that link.
- Locate the text box which containing code similar to the following (this is the SSNB code):
Important Note: The above text box is only an example. You will need to use the code from the text box on your Get SSNB Code page.
- Copy the SSNB code from the text box.
Note: If you only want the navbar without any extraneous trim, you can copy just the portion from your text box which is highlighted in this example:
<center><script type="text/javascript"
src="http://ss.webring.com/navbar?f=j;y=YOUR_WEBRING_ID;u=########"></script>
Powered by <a href="http://dir.webring.com/rw" target=_top>WebRing</a>.</center>
- Paste the copied SSNB code into the site you have registered
How will the navbar look?
Initially the SSNB may be displayed as follows:
The above is a placeholder navbar. This appears when the SSNB code is first added to a page, or if a site is not yet approved for any rings corresponding to the SSNB.
Generally the SSNB will display the ring's normal navbar either the day it is added, or the morning of the following day. This will appear as follows:
Why does the navbar looks odd on my site?
This doesn't happen frequently, but when it does, it is generally a result of conflicting CSS.
If a site has CSS with an element set as Important, the CSS on the site will override the CSS from the navbar.
This can cause the navbar's dimensions to appear skewed, or alter the display of links.
Conversly, the CSS used in this ring's navbar uses explicit elements. This prevents the navbar CSS from affecting the display of anything else on the page.
